The Test of English as a Foreign Language, more widely known as the TOEFL test, is owned by Educational Testing Services (ETS). ETS is a not-for-profit organization that is based in Princeton, New Jersey, USA.
There are two versions of the TOEFL exam: TOEFL iBT and TOEFL Essentials. Both TOEFL tests assess your English language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. The main differences between the two are that the TOEFL iBT test is a longer test (approximately 2 hours in duration) and has been approved by more than 12,000 universities, colleges and countries’ immigration departments around the world. Unlike TOEFL iBT, the TOEFL Essentials test is shorter (approximately 1.5 hours) and is approved by several hundred universities and colleges. TOEFL Essentials has not yet been approved for immigration purposes. So if you are planning to migrate, then TOEFL iBT is the test for you.
You can take the TOEFL test online with the TOEFL iBT Home Edition or you can find a TOEFL test center near you. If you are taking the TOEFL test for immigration purposes, you must attend a TOEFL test centre because Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA do not accept the Home Edition for immigration purposes.
