Frequently Asked Questions - IELTS Academic

IELTS Academic serves people applying to university or seeking professional registration in an English-speaking country. It runs 2 hours 45 minutes across Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, scored on a band scale from 0 to 9. You can sit it on paper or computer at a test centre, or online at home in some locations.

Listening and Speaking match across both. Academic Reading uses texts from books, journals and newspapers. Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, graph or diagram. General Training swaps these for everyday material and a letter-writing task. Universities require Academic.

Most universities ask for an overall band between 6.0 and 7.0, often with a floor in each skill. Requirements swing by institution and course, and competitive programs ask for more. Check the entry requirements for your specific course before you set a target.

Writing, for most candidates, and Task 1 chart description in particular, because it demands an analytical style few test takers have practised. Speaking comes second. Examiners score both against detailed criteria, so learning what the band descriptors reward beats general English study.
